i-mate shows two new phones

i-mate has updated its site design and now showcases two new smartphones: one Standard edition and one Professional. Both come with the JAMA branding and are tri-band GSM phones which limits them to mainly European usage. Both run on Windows Mobile 6, 300Mhz processor and have 128MB ROM; 64MB RAM and microSD slot. 2-megapixel camera with auto-focus is also a common feature for the two.The JAMA 201 is the WM6 Standard smartphone with landscape display and full QWERTY keyboard below it. The display attracts with its VGA (640x480) resolution and size of 2.5 inches. The JAMA 101 has 2.4” QVGA touch display. We guess it will have low price and will be targeted as affordable WM6 Professional phone.

Nokia 6500 slide

Mobile phones’ manufacturers are fairly creative setting up their market strategies in the pursuit of attracting greater attention towards their products. As a rule, Nokia phone models have been known for their “letter-number” codes, yet complete names have also been introduced recently. This is a good move to accentuate a specific product (or series) with the goal to facilitate its fixing in the customer’s mind. Developing the idea further, the Finnish announced two new models with identical number codes but different extensions: 6500 classic and 6500 slide.

Today, we will review the capabilities of Nokia 6500 Slide in more detail. The name itself gives a hint at its type. This is an attractively designed up-to-date unit that belongs to the upper medium class, featuring the well-known Series 40 user interface, enabled to operate in 3G networks, and disposing of a 3.2 megapixel Carl Zeiss optics camera.

Sales package contents:

Nokia 6500 slide
Nokia Battery BP-5M
Nokia Charger AC-4
Nokia Wired Stereo Headset HS-47
256 MB Micro SD Memory Card
Micro USB Cable CA-101
TV-Out Cable CA-92U
CD ROM
User guide

This is a good set with enough accessories to immediately commence utilizing the full potential of the device. In case the micro SD card would seem small to you, bear in mind that the phone officially supports up to 4 GB memory, which is the maximum for this standard. There are, indeed, the so-called hi-capacity (HC) memory cards with even larger memory space, which are not supported by the phone, though.

HTC TOUCH

LG Viewty Preview

LG Prada was one of the first phones on the market, designed as a device that is mainly controlled by its large touch display. In this aspect, it was similar to the earlier announced Apple iPhone, but traded some of its functionality for smaller dimensions and more stylish design and interface. Although it looked well, it had mediocre features and was excellent for fashion gurus, but not so for people that want all-in-one phone. LG has decided to change this, and it happens with the Viewty which moves the functionality of the previous model to the next level. It is not co-branded with Prada, but still has similar dimensions and design, which definitely class it in the "pretty-phones" line. As the phone is still not commercially available we are using a prototype unit. At this moment, all Viewty phones around the globe are pre-production units, with early versions of the software. The quality of both the hardware and the software might change when commercially available versions appear, and this is the reason why we, unlike some other sites, will do a Preview instead of full Review and will not give any ratings. Once final units appear, we will update you with in-depth review with all the opinions and the ratings.Actually, the Viewty is slightly larger than the Prada in any aspect in addition to being heavier, but still is well sized, considering the 3" display and the 5-megapixel camera. 14mm thick, it fits easily into the pocket and in the hand definitely feels lighter than the specifications say. The front looks stylish, housing the speaker, LG logo and camera for video calling on the top, the huge display in the middle, and just three buttons on the bottom. It deffinitely has a high-end look and feel but next to the Prada phone looks more like an advanced gadget instead of a stylish handset.

The touch-screen technology has been used for many years, but in the cellphone market it is getting more and more popular with each day. Although it is the main controlling mechanism in many smartphones, most of the manufacturers are trying to give the customer an alternative (jog-dial, trackballs, wheels, etc) for single handed usage. In contrast, when it comes to non-smart devices with touch-displays, the idea is to avoid the physical buttons as much as possible. A class of “touch-screen-only” phones appeared, started by the Apple iPhone and the LG Prada. The Viewty is also positioned here with its 3” WQVGA (240x400) pixels display with up to 262k colors.

What must be noted is the type of the display. In the Prada phone, LG used a matrix that was activated by the electricity of the skin, while in the Viewty it is standard, which can be operated with an object like a pen (or stylus) for example. The accuracy is improved but if you don’t use the two devices next to each other will hardly notice this. What makes great difference in the two displays is the brightness and color representation, where the Viewty is an obvious winner. Set at 40% brightness, it is as bright as the Prada set on 100% but unlike it has accurate colors, not biased to yellow. Unfortunately, sensor for controlling the brightness is lacking and you’ll have to manually change it in different environments.Like the Prada, the Viewty keeps the tradition of 3-keys on the front - Аnswer, Reject and Clear between them. Here they are merging with the design and are hardly noticeable when not lit up. Unlocking the phone (keyboard, display) will illuminate them to be easily distinguished.

As the Viewty is designed as high-end cameraphone, the back side is designed to match this idea and reminds of a pocket camera. On the right is the big lens with circular scroll-ring around it, and next to it are the flash and the focus-assist lamp. As in Prada, the lens is branded by Schneider-KREUZNACH which is one of the big names in the optics market. The ring around the lens is used as a scroll in various situations. By default in the camera interface, it controls the digital zoom level but if you’ve chosen the manual focus options (see the camera part) it will change the focusing distance. It will also double as a scroll (up-down) in various menus around the interface that require one. As you know, the stand-alone cameras have lens on the front, big display on the back and lots of controls on the top. It’s the same for the Viewty, and all camera keys are on the top when in landscape and respectively on the right when in portrait orientation. Here are the (camera-camcorder-playback), the (un)lock key that turns on/off the digital stabilizer and the two-step shutter, which is also a shortcut.

GRE STUDY

Graduate Record Exam is an exam which prospective undergraduates take in order to take admission in a graduation course. When you pass out of a school and seek admission in a college or university you will be expected to have taken the GRE. This exam is a part of the admission criteria of colleges. Your school results are not sufficient for admission in a college. College admission authorities intend to take in the best students so that they produce good results. GRE acts as a source of certifying the caliber of students at the same standard level.GRE tests the candidates for their proficiency in English, their ability of quantitative reasoning and their analytical writing skills. This it does through three sections of the test; Verbal Section, Quantitative Reasoning Section and Analytical Writing Section. Each of these sections has a fixed format and fixed types of questions. These questions are not of the ordinary type and level which you have done during your schooling. They are tricky and require practice and study. Hence in order to score well you will have to take up GRE study seriously and work hard. After all, it is not just the passing that counts here but a good score as well. It is finally the merit that the colleges will consider for admitting students. The first step towards GRE study is planning. You have to start well in advance about when and how you are going to start preparing for the exam. Gain as much knowledge about the test as you can through friends, books, teachers, internet, official websites, blogs etc. After you are well aware of what the test requirements are choose the best medium for GRE study according to your capabilities and shortcomings. For each section of GRE you will have to practice. There is no portion of the test which you can attempt without studying specifically for it.For the verbal section you need to concentrate on the vocabulary and English grammar. For improving your vocabulary it is best to get a list of words. This list you can download from some websites, or consult a book or prepare one yourself. The easiest way is to get a readymade wordlist but it is ideal to prepare one yourself. You can start a year in advance and start writing difficult words which you come across in newspapers, magazines, textbooks etc. compile them and start learning a few everyday. You must also know the usage of each word and for this you can refer to examples or form some on your own. The verbal section also has questions on antonyms and so you must also learn the opposites of the words you list. The knowledge of English grammar is equally important in this section. You will be asked to complete sentences with words given in five options. You have to fill in the blanks with those words which complete the sentence both logically and grammatically. For this you can go back to basics of grammar which you were taught in school. Take up a good book for grammar and revise your concepts. This revision should be done before you start with any written practice so that you can fix the concepts of grammar. English grammar, though complex, is brief. You need knowledge of applied grammar instead of just remembering the rules. Thus it becomes important that whatever you study, you practice as well for it. This section also has reading comprehension questions. You can practice these from any grammar book, or other books especially for the purpose of GRE study. Practice of comprehension will help you learn how to speed up and save time in the real exam.

A Gaming PC for Under Rs 55,000

A Gaming PC for Under Rs 55,000

This Year is shaping up to be a great one for PC gaming. Finally there are some great single-player titles getting released on what is fast becoming a fading platform. Every single great game seems to have headed over to the consoles.

Thankfully, with recent launches like BioShock and upcoming titles like Jericho, MOH 4, and the big one Crysis, it’s the perfect time to upgrade your aging rig for a more powerful performer. Of course, an upgrade can mean different things for different users, depending on their purse strings and what they define as acceptable. Another thing to note is the wide disparity in prices across various towns and cities. Keeping these factors in mind, we think the perfect mid-level gaming rig can be yours for Rs 55,000.

Please bear in mind that the amounts we have quoted in this feature are based on Mumbai prices. They have been taken from a wide variety of dealers and are currently prevailing street prices. These are 'non-bargained' prices, so your persuasive sweet-talk could perhaps save you some more cash. So, here we go...CPU:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6750

The recently introduced Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 is a second generation product that's had its FSB bumped to 1333 MHz from the previous FSB of 1066. Priced at Rs 7100, this is the best VFM processor available right now. It has a clock speed of 2.33 GHz and a 4 MB L2 cache.

Motherboard: XFX 650i Ultra

Over the last couple of years, XFX has developed a very good reputation for its graphic cards and its exceptional after sales service. The company recently branched off into motherboards, with the introduction of Nvidia's 680 and 650 chipsets.
As its name suggests, the board we've chosen is based on the 650i Ultra chipset which has native support for the 1333 MHz FSB. The board lacks onboard graphics, but does offer a single PCIe 16x slot, 1 PCIe x1 slot, 8 USB slots, 3 PCI slots, and 4 SATA 2 (3.0 GB) slots. It is readily available at a cost of Rs 5,250.

RAM: Kingston DDR2 667 RAM 2x1GB

RAM prices have recently gone into freefall mode. This is good news for consumers, as it is now possible to buy two sticks of 1 GB very cheaply. This gives your PC a large performance boost, thanks to dual-channel support on motherboards. The perfect brand to go with is Kingston. It offers a five-year warranty and costs Rs 2,500 (1250x2), making it an ideal choice for our rig.

Graphics: XFX 8600 GTS

The XFX 8600 GTS is based on the G80 series of chipsets, which is DX-10 compatible, offers 256 MB of RAM, runs on GDDR3 RAM with a memory clock of 2.26 GHz and a clock rate of 730 MHz. At its price point of Rs 11,500, it's an incredible performer. We currently have this GPU with us in the lab and are thoroughly satisfied with its performance. We plan to carry a single review along with an ATI vs Nvidia shootout, so you'll see just why we are recommending this card. It's that darned good.

Sound (onboard): HDA Azalia 8 Channel High Definition Audio

Onboard sound has come a long way in recent years. Today's onboard chips are multi-channel capable, and can easily compete with lower-end sound cards like Creative's Audigy 2 ZS. The XFX offers an 8 channel chipset with great audio output for excellent music, video, and gaming experiences.

LAN: Intel Gigabit Ethernet Controller 10/100/1000

This standard Intel Gigabit onboard 10/100/1000 LAN gives a maximum transfer speed of 1000 Mbps. It is fast enough to take care of your broadband internet (most have a connection speed of 256 Kbps or 512 Kbps). Though Gigabit LAN is already present, most home networks are only capable of handling 100 Mbps speeds. Hence, you have the right firepower in Intel's 10/100/1000 LAN.

HDD: Seagate SATA II HDD 250 GB

The cost of hard drives has dropped drastically as well in recent times. Units currently available offer an excellent price advantage if you compare the cost of the drive with its storage capacity. We had to decide between Seagate and Western Digital, and chose to go with the former due to the five-year warranty it offers. The 250 GB is built on the SATA II platform and offers more than adequate storage for all your needs. At under Rs 3,000, the drive is a great bargain.

Optical Drive: Lite-On LH-20A1P

The market for ODDs has become total VFM now. Prices of blanks have dropped to an all-time low. This is one segment where a single company’s lead has remained unchallenged for quite a few years. The brand is Liteon, whose products have come to define and set the standards for others to follow.

Monitor: Viewsonic VG1930WM

Viewsonic is a brand that really needs no introduction. The VG1930WM we have chosen here is a budget 19-inch widescreen monitor with a native resolution of 1440x900, a response time of 5 ms and a contrast ratio of 700:1. One thing that sets it apart from others is the fact that it has native support for DVI-D, which gives much sharper images and allows for richer color rendition.

Keyboard & Mouse: Microsoft Comfort Keyboard 2000 and Microsoft Comfort Optical Mouse 1000Trying to fit in a dedicated gaming keyboard/mouse combination in our modest budget is quite a tall order. We considered various options and chose this combination as it offers nice ergonomics and a surprisingly good gaming experience. However, if your budget allows it, we recommend that you look at either Razer's products or one of the Logitech combos.

Cabinet: Cooler Master Elite 330 / Cooler Master Extreme Power 600 W

The ideal cabinet for our beast comes from Cooler Master or CM as it’s popularly known. CM offers some of the best PC cabinets and PSUs (Power Supply Units). We chose a mid-size tower with seven expansion slots, two USB ports, and five 3.5 inch bays.
This cabinet ensures adequate cooling via a provided 120mm fan and a front side 120mm fan mount. But it doesn't come with a power supply, so we went in for the Cooler Master Extreme Power 600 W. This provides 600 W of power at 70% efficiency, and comes with full support for the newest Intel standard (ATX V2.01 12W).

Speakers: Altec Lansing ATP3

Altec Lansing makes some great PC speakers that offer an excellent experience for games and movies. The ATP3 2.1 speaker system fits well into our budget, offering above average performance and some features usually found in products twice as expensive. The subwoofer packs a punch and is capable of outputting 18 watts RMS. The speakers are equally well-powered and manages 12 watts RMS.

What I have built here is a strong starting base for an ideal mid-level gaming machine. With a few more judicious upgrades, you will be able to build a really powerful gaming machine that can easily resist obsolescence for a few years.

ISSUE TOPICS1. It is primarily through formal education that a culture tries to perpetuate the ideas it favors and discredit the ideas it fears2. In any field of inquiry, the beginner is more likely than the expert to make important discoveries3. Technologies not only influence but actually determine social customs and ethics4. It is always an individual who is the impetus for innovation; the details may be worked out by a team, but true innovation results from the enterprise and unique perception of an individual
